The Washington, DC Leaders of Tomorrow Program (LOT) is a mentoring
outreach effort of the National Black MBA Association-Washington, DC Chapter. It
is a network of aggressive high school students and professionals working
together to guide young people down a path to early professionalism and success.
Mentors work with students on a consistent basis to help them the habits
necessary for achievement, to set and reach goals, and understand personal and
collective responsibility. We help young adults focus on success through
consistent interaction, raising expectations, and provision of the tools and
resources necessary to meet their goals. Students are encouraged to take on
difficult leadership and academic challenges and earn scholarship money. Over
the last decade, the program has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarship
funds.
Mentorship, by itself, is not enough. Tutoring, by itself, is not enough. College
preparation, by itself, is not enough. An integrated program is necessary to help
students increase their professionalism, increase their confidence, focus on
academic achievement, and plan for the future. LOT is that integrated program –
an intense system of engagement and activities related to academic excellence,
college preparation, professional development, community service, life lessons,
finance, SAT/ACT preparation, history and current events, networking, public
speaking, analytical development, and leadership.
The National Black MBA Association, Inc. operates Leaders of Tomorrow
programs in various locations in America and the United Kingdom. The
Washington, DC LOT program is one of the oldest year-round LOT programs in
the nation.
WHAT LOT IS NOT
While the Leaders of Tomorrow Program is a mentoring program in form, it
functions much like a system of challenges. Though mentors function as life
advisors, their primary job is to challenge the student participants and then help
them meet those challenges.
The challenges are designed to be difficult and outside the comfort level of
someone in the age group of student participants in the program. This is
categorically not simply a “stay-in-school” program, or a program designed to
simply keep kids off the street.
Though it does serve both of those functions, it is structured to be much more
aggressive and teach children how to think and act as professionals even though
they are adolescent in age. Therefore, student participants need to be
aggressive, driven, and engaged and not simply looking for something to do to
stay out of trouble. LOT is also not a tutoring program, though tutoring is a
component of the program. Students must maintain appropriate academic
averages because that will be critical to their admission into college. Therefore,
LOT makes resources available to help students who have a general lack of
understanding in a particular area that is not based on a lack of effort.
NATIONAL LEADERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
Most chapters of the National Black MBA Association operate LOT programs.
Although they each operate differently and independently, many share common
traits, values, and guidelines. Chapters collaborate on many projects, notably the
national conference and National Business Case Competition. Learn more about
the national program by clicking on the logo to the left.
